Make Sporting Events Contribute to Teamwork at Work
Make Sporting Events Contribute to Teamwork at WorkMake Sporting Events Contribute to Teamwork at WorkSporting events, presidential inaugurations, national tragedies, deaths of prominent individuals, and acts of terror all detract from workplace productivity as employees focus their interest and energy on the event. Whether they watch television in conference rooms and gathering areas or watch unfolding events in front of their computer, little work is accomplished. Workplaces can honor their employees need to view and participate in national events or tap into their downright interest in sporting events through teamwork. Employees will be distracted and involved anyway. Why not use these events to further positive teamwork in your workplace? Focusing on sporting events, as a more positive national event for involving employees in your workplace, consider the range of activities the company could sponsor to tap into teamwork and their team spirit. Rather than forcing employees to hud dle alone in their cubicles to furtively watch the tournament games stream, create a way for employees to join together to watch and celebrate teamwork. You may avoid the worst hits to your productivity, that generally accompany employee preoccupation with sporting events, by scheduling company events to coincide with employee interests. The company benefits from encouraging teamwork and positive employee morale, while intangible, are real. Sporting Events Most Likely to Sap Productivity Global outplacement consultancy Challenger, Gray Christmas, Inc., according to a press release, created a non-scientific ranking of the top sporting events that potentially affect workplace productivity. These are the events you might want to prepare to manage and potentially, turn into plusses for teamwork and employee motivation within your company. These are applicable to all fan sporting events. Managed and celebrated effectively in your workplace, each of these events can contribute to the development of your teamwork culture. NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament (AKA, March Madness) Office tournament pools and the fact that about half of the first 32 games are played during work hours makes March Madness the granddaddy of productivity sappers. Need proof? The NCAA Boss Button, which instantly hides the tournament webcast behind work-related pages if the boss comes into view, has become increasingly sophisticated and useful in every year since it welches first created in 2006. (How silly is that? These are adults, people.) NFL Fantasy Football Millions of fantasy football participants manage their teams from their office. Whether its preparing for their fantasy draft, recruiting league co-players, or initiating trades, the time devoted to fantasy football may seem minor, but over the 17-week season, the hours add up. Then, theres all of that midnight oil burned plotting strategy to consider, too. The Super Bowl The Super Bowl is not played during work hours, so the impact is felt on Monday when the revelers return to work. Check your attendance records and count your hungover, tired staff members to assess the real damage in your workplace. Did you know that some fans have launched a campaign to make post-Super Bowl Monday an official work holiday? You know, get a life. World Cup Soccer Not yet big in the U.S., World Cup Soccer has a huge impact on workplace productivity worldwide. Some companies in Europe and South America shut down on the day of a big match. College Football Bowl Season Bowl games start in mid-December and, whether they are played during the day, or just keep your workforce up at night, their impact is felt in the workplace. Fortunately, work in many workplaces around the holidays is typically slower than normal. Baseball Playoffs and World Series Games, though mostly played in the evening, produce groggy fans at work the next day, particularly in cities with playoff/World Series teams. NHL Playoffs/Stanley Cup Finals Professional hockey playoffs belastung almost two months. For cities with teams in the playoffs, these games create distractions as fans critique their teams performance and plan post-game celebrations. NBA Playoffs/Finals As with baseball and hockey, productivity is mostly killed in cities with competing teams. The biggest employee productivity threat comes from late night game-watching on work nights. The Olympics Since four years pass between the winter Olympics and the summer Olympics, these events attract a lot of dedicated viewers. Most employees put in their watching time during prime-time television hours, but faster internet connections are making the live streaming of events from employee desks possible. And, whats not to love about beach volleyball, gymnastics, ski jumping, or the half pipe? Apple Product Announcements Okay, Challenger is mostly tongue-in-cheek with this but Apple product announcements do foster almost as much pre-event hype and water cooler speculation as actual spo rting events do. Blogging the event, product reviews, reading all of these pages, and maybe even waiting in line for stores to open, sap employee productivity. Employ an up-to-the-minute IT staff? You know exactly what the situation is when a new Apple product comes to town.

4 #NYFW trends you can wear at the workplace
4 NYFW trends you can wear at the workplace4 NYFW trends you can wear at the workplaceRunway models shouldnt have all the fun Translate these fashion week looks into workplace-appropriate attire. Last week, the top fashion brands in the world descended on New York City for New York Fashion Week 2015. And it looks like the latest and greatest in fashion have equipped us with vibrant, eye-catching trends that steer away from the tired, cold-weather boots-and-a-cardigan uniform. Ready for a fashion rewind? These whimsical themes and menswear-inspired silhouettes can be easily integrated into work-appropriate attire for any industry. Whether youre a trend-conscious worker at a fashion publication or a no-nonsense financial executive, read on for ways to boost your work wardrobe and impress co-workers with your ability to interpret the latest runway trends.1. FringeSubtle fringe can give any outfit a 70s flair, which happens to be the go-to theme seen on the runways in New York last week. But lets face it, in a stricter workplace, stray pieces of fabric dangling from your dress or top can be distracting to you, and those in your office. However, those in at startups or in creative industries can take advantage of their fashion-friendly work environment by sporting accessories adorned with a dash of fringe- think a pair of boots, or a purse. For ladies who tend to be a bit bolder with their fashion choices, a long skirt lined with a bit of fringe could bring the trend to life.2. GinghamThough this print exploded in New York last fall as a top trend for spring 2015, Gingham is still in on the runways - perhaps due in part to its incredible versatility. Designer Alutzarra shows how the same print, but featured in varying colors on a different silhouettes, can portray very different looks suitable for contrasting company cultures.A black-and-white gingham print adds an air of retro sophistication and could be adorned anywhere, anytime, from January to July. Below is an ex ample of how gingham print adds a fun, 50s flair to a simple skirt-and-jacket ensemble, while still maintaining a conservative appearance. On the other hand, a colorful gingham-patterned blouse- think picnic-blanket chic- would be the perfect meinung piece for casual summer office days. A dress like the one shown below is a great example of what a woman in a more wardrobe-lenient office environment could wear during a sweltering summer day (But maybe with a few more buttons closed).3. TurtlenecksLayering was all the rage on the runway last week, and it appears that turtlenecks are a necessary ingredient in a toasty sache 2015 ensemble. In these remaining frigid winter months, take advantage of this trend and wrap yourself up in a chunky turtleneck sweater in lieu of a flimsy cardigan or zip-up hoodie. If youre looking to take this trend to the next level, many designers have shown turtlenecks peeking out from beneath sundresses. Got a sundress youd love to wear to the office, but its a bout 40 degrees too cold? Think about throwing a chich, black turtleneck underneath it.4. WhiteWhite is clearly the go-to color for Fall 2015. Designers are contrasting this modest color with adventurous silhouettes for a striking effect. A word of warning Be extra-wary of coffee stains. If youre not looking to stun in a stark-white outfit, white, silk, collared blouses are also turning up all over the catwalk. These staple pieces can be worn to any office environment. Try pairing it with patterned pants for a fashion-forward office, or with slacks or a pencil skirt for business attire. There is always a subtle way to incorporate the latest trends into your wardrobe. Be aware of what your employers consider to be appropriate, but remember theres no need to sacrifice your love of fashion just because you work in, say, the financial industry. So take a risk with your look as you implement trends from the latest New York Fashion week, but try to keep the risk of appalling your boss to a minimum.

How to Be More Likable Around the Office - The Muse
How to Be More Likable Around the Office - The MuseHow to Be More Likable Around the OfficeYou can probably think of a handful of people at the office whom everyone seems to genuinely like, people who are indescribably charming and magnetic, people you want to work with and get to know better, people you want to emulate. Wouldnt it be awesome if you were one of those people? Of course it would beThe following seven tips are great (and easy) ways to be more likable at work that you can put into action today.1. Find the Right Co-signIn the real world, the average persons probably reluctant to co-sign for someone on a new car or apartment. Luckily its much easier in the office to find a guy whos willing to take a chance and vouch for you. So identify the power players and work to build a relationship with those who are already well-liked and admired. Then, follow their example.2. Play Your Position Like an All-StarIts rare to catch LA Clippers point guard Chris Paul battling Dwight Howa rd for a rebound. Still, the six-foot Paul remains an eight-time All-Star because he plays his position really, really well. Figure out what you can excel at and work it. Maybe youre a numbers whiz, a vocabulary master, or confident presentation person. Do you know everything there is to know about Google Docs, or have more email hacks up your sleeve than anyone could possibly need? Whatever it is that adds to your awesomeness, take advantage of it and share your knowledge.3. Set Up Regular One-on-OnesMake a coffee date or out-of-office lunch plan with various co-workers throughout the week. They can be people you know well, people youre just getting to know, and others whose names youve just learned. Dont underestimate the power of a one-on-one interaction, which can quickly help you forge a connection with a new colleague. Learning about other departments is beneficial to your work, but if you can go deeper and discover something non-work related about the people you work with, al l the better. 4. Make an Effort to SocializeSomeone has to send the email or spread the word about where to grab those happy hour drinks- could that person be you? Organize an evening get-together at a local bar, or offer to lend a hand to your colleague responsible for organizing behauptung events. If drinks arent really a part of your offices culture, consider other ways to initiate social interaction with colleagues outside of business hours. Maybe theres a networking event a few of your team members could attend as a group. Or, perhaps, you put a feeler out there for a book club or sports team. Making an effort can go a long way in getting people to think youre pretty awesome.5. Find Small Ways to ConnectBond with your peers by keeping them up-to-date with the newest and most exciting news. Listen to their interests and ask questions. Send restaurant reviews to the office foodie or share info on the summer concert lineup to the musically inclined crew. These recommendations are exactly the kind of gestures thatll make you a memorable colleague.6. Be the Office CheerleaderBe the biggest cheerleader on the team. When someone accomplishes a feat, whether big or small, be the first to clap and personally congratulate them. I used to keep a bottle of top-shelf bourbon in my desk drawer that Id whip out when a teammate closed a deal. The whiskey lovers among us would toast as a team. The camaraderie was contagious, and trust me when I say that it genuinely feels good to be there for others and root for their achievements- after all, wouldnt you wish for the same?7. Play 21 QuestionsLets say youve got a few minutes before a meeting starts or while youre waiting for the coffee to finish brewing. Instead of scrolling through the apps on your phone, make eye contact with a nearby colleague. Most people enjoy talking about themselves and their interests, so ask leading questions. Ask about their weekend, their kids, or their latest TV obsession. This move takes littl e effort but can pay off big time in making you seem approachable and friendly. An old buddy and co-worker of mine has far more friends than anyone Ive ever met. When we worked alongside each other he was the it-guy in the company. He had an endless string of dinner or drink invitations always. I once asked him the secret to his reputation. His answer was simple and became one of the best pieces of advice Ive ever received, Im the driver of every single one of my relationships in life. What he meant was that he made a point to get to know people and put himself out there. He did all of the above, and it paid off. Photo of meeting courtesy of quergebude Productions/Getty Images.

Six easy steps to make you more resilient
Six easy steps to make you more resilientSix easy steps to make you more resilientWhen I joined the FBI, the FBIs transfer policy stipulated that I could be sent anywhere in the U.S. - the needs of the Bureau would always come before my own. After I told myself that I welches resilient and could survive transfer-hell, I learned that every few years the FBIs transfer policy changed My biggest fear was to be transferred to a dead-end outpost in the middle of nowhere. The constant threat of change and upheaval made me doubt whether I was resilient enough to always land on my feet.Change frightens us because it is a voyage into the unknown. Ironically, since the unknown forces us to adapt to new circumstances, it is also the place where we can develop new talents and strengths. If we are resilient, we can embark on a jurney that moves us beyond self-limiting beliefs, boredom, and lack of confidence.Change is the great dream of every heart because it moves us closer to our full potential . To refuse the challenge that comes with change can be a great act of self-neglect.If you have mental toughness, you will do anything to break the cycle of behavior that disempowers you. To push beyond your limits takes a resilient mind. It requires you to move into your discomfort zone and cross a threshold that awakens a variety of emotions such as confusion, fear, excitement, sadness - and yes, dreams. There should always be a healthy tension between the life we have settled for and the potential that still calls us.Here are 6 easy steps to make you more resilient1. Make a planIts very important that we find ways to feel relaxed with the new direction life is taking us, even if it is unwanted or unexpected. Plans are an easy way to make us feel comfortable and in control.According to social psychologists, we feel the most comfortable and in control of life when our thoughts and feelings are consistent with our behavior. When we think or feel one way, and then behave in a manner that is inconsistent, it produces cognitive dissonance. This creates the anxiety we experience when we try to justify stressful behavior.Plans create a roadmap that can help us work through the stress that is produced when we need to be resilient in the face of change. They are a safety net that gives our mind reason to believe that we are in control. Therefore, were more comfortable when we need to make a break from the past. How To Make It Work For You If you are going to change by moving into your discomfort zone, you need to have a strategy in mind of how youre going to do it. Keep it simple, and review it often to make sure youre still on course.2. Ask yourself lots of questionsOur brain is uber alert for change of any kind in our environment. When our limbic brain detects an abnormality, our animal instinct takes over. As a result, our first reaction is to fight, flee, or freeze. None of ansicht reactions produce the results you need to be resilient in the face of change.Instea d, rewire your brain. Psychologist Marilee Adams suggests that questions can virtually rewire our emotions, thoughts, and behavior. According to her research, the probing questions that we ask ourselves can open up our mind. We are then receptive to new information and connect it to what we already know. This allows our brain to assimilate new knowledge about our circumstances so we can develop a comfort zone that lessens stress. How To Make It Work For You Ask questions that probe the facts surrounding your new situation. Questions are piercing little darts that expose hidden anxiety. Once they elicit an honest answer from us, we are able to name the beast in the room - that is, the fear we are experiencing. It is, however, essential to honestly name what is going on before you can trigger change in emotion, thought, or behavior.3. Take small but steady steps forwardWhen change is foisted upon us, were often left with an overwhelming feeling that at the end of the day we can only a ccept our fate. While that is true to some degree, a resilient mind will find ways to adapt and adjust in a way that will leave it in control.Small wins are critical because they make the change real. They also create the opportunity to build momentum. Confidence is produced as we move past our self-limiting beliefs and become more resilient. How To Make It Work For You The way to adapt to new circumstances is to look for opportunities to improve your situation in small, continuous steps. Continuous improvement is key because it also implies steady movement forward. Small steps allow you to make changes, monitor the results, and then adjust as needed.4. Get rid of doubtersWhether you chose your new circumstances, or they were foisted upon you, doubters and haters are likely to rear their ugly head. There are people who spew negativity wherever they go, and if youre smart youll turn on your heel and head in the opposite direction. This is leid so easy when the doubters are members of y our own family. As they say, Pick your friends well because youre stuck with family. Its important to realize that most people are negative as a result of their own problems and issues.Be very intentional about those with whom you share your plans and dreams. Think about how you might connect with people who are wiser and more experienced than yourself. If there are people who will not support you, dont spend as much time with them, or limit how much you see them. How To Make It Work For You Identify two or three (or more) people you admire and respect with whom you can sit down with on a quarterly grund to review your progress. These are the same people you can turn to when times get tough as well.5. Develop new, better habitsNew circumstances may require new habits so we can remain diligent and resilient.Psychologist Wendy Wood suggests that 40% of the time we dont actually think about what were doing. This is because our mind is trained to fall back on habitual behaviors.Habits ar e hard to break because they are found in deeper structures of the brain. This leaves much of our working memory available to deal with everyday surprises and situations. Habits dont need as much of the brains energy, so changing them takes a lot of attention. How To Make It Work For You A change in your situation is the perfect time to establish new habits because the old ones are more easily disrupted. Immediately replace an old habit with a new one. Stay aware of a change until it becomes a new habit. Dont push yourself too hard or too fast because this may only cause you to slip up.6. Grit upWimps are not resilient because they dont know how to move forward when the going gets tough or uncomfortable. They roll over and play it safe. Grit is your ability to persevere over the long-run and thrive despite all kinds of unplanned events. As leaders, entrepreneurs and business owners, grit is an essential skill because it is the one thing you will need to succeed. If you give up when th e going gets tough, youre done.Talent does not trump determination. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Grit, persistence, and determination will keep you moving ahead when your circumstances and environment has changed. How To Make It Work For You Face your problems head on. It isnt your problems that define you - its how you react and recover from them. Your problems are not going away unless you do something about them. Do not quit when you feel you can no longer deal with a crisis. Have the grit to stay in the game but be flexible with your idea of what is right as you approach your new situation. This article first appeared onLaRaeQuy.com.

Interviewing Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring Managers
Interviewing Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring ManagersInterviewing Tips for Five Different Types of Hiring ManagersDid you land an interview? Congratulations, youre halfway to the promise of a new job Youre armed with interviewing tips and feel fully prepared as you walk in the door. But then you encounter an interviewer who completely throws you off. Hes either totally unprepared (e.g., lost your resume) or he makes you feel really awkward (e.g., long periods of silence). Well, sometimes bad things happen to good interviewees.Regardless of how much you practice, you never know what to expect when you meet the hiring manager. To help you stay in control, here are interviewing tips to adjust to five schrifts of common interviewers1. The bumbler. Bumblers have virtually no idea how to conduct an effective job interview. They know they need to hire someone, but they havent gotten around to formulating specific hiring criteria or asking probing interview questions. They tend to ba se their impressions of you on factors that have almost nothing to do with what it takes to do the job.Advice Bumblers are often easy to impress, but you have to lead them. When dealing with a bumbler, stay in command of your own story and keep reiterating your strengths. 2. The chatterbox. Chatterboxes like to talk. And talk. And talk. They talk about themselves, the company, their kids, their workout regimen, their pets, their hobbies If youre lucky, theyll get around to the specifics of the job. They talk so much, in fact, and so incessantly that if youre not careful, you may never get a chance to present your case.Advice Pick your spots to dart in and out of the interviewers conversation, making short (but self-serving) comments that play off whatever the chatterbox is chattering about. One of the most overlooked interviewing tips is to ask your own questions. Pose pointed questions specific to the job or company, and redirect the chatterbox back to those topics if the rambling resumes.3. The poker face. Poker-faced interviewers can make your skin crawl. They sit there, sphinx-like, as you talk about yourself and your qualifications. They dont nod. They dont smile. Nothing seems to faze or impress them.Advice When it comes to interviewing tips for dealing with this type of hiring manager, the key is to stay calm. Avoid trying too hard evoke a response. Turning up the heat or your own enthusiasm isnt likely to make a difference with truly stoic interviewers. Youre probably making an impression Its simply not registering on the interviewers face.4. The gamesperson. Gamespeople view the job interview as a game of cat and mouse. Their main goal is finding ways to trip you up. Sometimes they are subtle and harmless other times they can be mean-spirited, like ignoring you when you walk in the door as a test to see how assertive you are.Advice If you feel like youre being tested, determine which reaction would best serve your own interests. If the interviewer is simply rude, you need to ask yourself if you want to work for this person or company. One of the best interviewing tips is to remain cool and professional at all times, but set boundaries if any situation is making you uncomfortable.5. The late interviewer. Its unreasonable to expect every interview to start exactly on time. But if the interviewer is running 20 or 30 minutes late, and you havent been given an apology or explanation, consider rescheduling. This approach might serve you better if you suspect the interviewer is under pressure or time constraints.Advice Be careful to conceal whatever impatience you may be feeling. If you suggest rescheduling the interview, convey that you understand that unexpected events frequently happen in business and that you would be happy to return when things are less hectic. The above examples and interviewing tips are courtesy of Job Hunting for Dummies, 2nd Edition (John Wiley Sons). Wed like to read your stories about the types of interview ers youve encountered. Add them in the comments section below.

How to Inspire Great Referrals From Employees
How to Inspire Great Referrals From EmployeesHow to Inspire Great Referrals From EmployeesA Towers Watson survey found that 54 percent of the companies that participated had problems attracting employees with critical skills, regardless of the current unemployment rate. Of the surveyed companies, 37 percent report having trouble hiring top-performing employees. Are you looking for employee referral program ideas so you can start a program of your own? You can overcome the shortage of top performing employees, which is expected to become even more intense over time when you create a work culture that inspires great employee referrals. Here is what works to garner employee referrals. The actions that will submarine your employee referrals are also covered. Why Employee Referrals Are a Critical Component of Recruiting Employee referrals are a critical component in your efforts to obtain and keep the best potential employees. Employee referrals provide better than average candidates because employees know your company culture and have an idea about what employees will work successfully in your organization. Employee referrals also reflect on the referring employee who wants to be positively regarded in your organization. No employee wants notlageoriety for referring an employee who failed to deliver or contribute or fit within your organization. Yet, despite their hype and potential usefulness, many employee referral programs fail to attain their program goal superior employee referrals. Dr. John Sullivan, aninternationally known HR thought-leader from California who specializes in providing bold and high business impact strategic talent management solutions said the following. Many recruiting managers with woefully under-performing programs think they have great programs and are somewhat shocked when they learn that, on average across all industries, 13 hires come from employee referral and that it is no longer uncommon for more than half of all external hires to come from employee referral in organizations with leading talent management functions... So, if your organization doesnt have an Employee Referral Program (ERP) or has one that produces less than 30 percent of your external hires, you need to examine your referral program to determine why you are experiencing poor results. Elements of Successful Employee Referral Programs In his studies, Dr. Sullivan finds consistent factors in successful employee referral programs. Among them, are these The employee referral program is responsive. The referral program provides feedback to the preferred candidate within one - three days of the referral and the referring employee just as quickly. The employee referral is given preferential treatment in the timeliness of the organizations initial contact, phone screen, interview, and the decision about hiring the employee. The employee referral program targets hard-to-fill positions that are essential to the organization. All employees are encour aged to make employee referrals, regardless of the position they hold. Employee referrals are not just about incentives or a cash bonus. Successful employee referral programs are part of a companys culture of building a highly effective team and encourage employees to select coworkers who fit the culture and the companys work ethic. Employee referrals should enhance the referring employees experience of work. The organization pays attention to the employee referral program. Examples include interviewing referring employees to determine how they met the employee they referred, asking for referrals at employee onboarding meetings, and giving current employees referral cards to pass out when they meet a well-qualified potential employee. Provide current employees with training about how to build their online and offline social networks and use them to recruit superior candidates for your company.Dr. Sullivan also found that having dedicated staff enhances the value of an employee referr al program. He fruchtweinly deals with large companies where this may be possible. However, even the smallest company can build value from and for employee referrers as just a part of an employees job. How to Encourage Referrals Without Financial Incentives An employee referral program that does not offer financial incentives can successfully attract participants. For enthusiasm and an ongoing stream of referrals, companies need to emphasize the importance of employee referrals for their recruiting efforts. Provide non-monetary incentives such as public recognition of an employee referral, easy ways for employees to track the status of their referrals, periodic banquets or lunch with the president to honor employees who make positive, qualified referrals, positive feedback in performance development planning and daily performance feedback for qualified employee referrals, and, in general,a culture that honors, respects, and recognizes employees who refer qualified candidates. Dr. S ullivans research found several novel approaches to paying incentives for employee referrals. Several companies contribute to an employees favorite charity. Others, rather than paying an employee a hefty incentive for a referral who is hired, offer small incentives for each employee referral, whether the referred candidate is hired or not. Tips for Avoiding Problems With Employee Referrals These ideas take care of the ongoing problems experienced by many poorly executed employee referral programs in which employees are rewarded for low-quality referrals. Or worse, employees are only rewarded for referrals that result in a hire. Even worse are referral programs that only pay the referring employee all or part of their bonus after the new employee works out successfully for six months or a year. Does it make any sense in an employee referral program to pay for low-quality referrals? Or, as is the case with many employee referrals, to pay an employee the promised bonus only after a referred employee is hired and successfully employed for six months to a year? It certainly submarines any motivation that an employee might have had to make referrals when the incentive is paid only after two situations occur that he or she cannot control. When you make a bonus contingent on hiring the referred employee and the new employee succeeding on the job for six months to a year, you have potentially demotivated your referring employee. Finally, organizations are woefully incompetent at providing feedback to the referring employee for referrals. Was the referred candidate interviewed? Rejected? Coming in for a second interview? You need to let a referring employee know what is happening each step of the way. Undermining the organizations efforts at obtaining employee referrals, too, is the speed at which employee referrals are acknowledged and reviewed. Many organizations are miserably slow at reaching out to the referred candidate. The Most Important Factor in Employee Referrals The most important factor in employee referrals is swift candidate evaluation and feedback to the referring employee. Encouraging employee referrals and successful employee referral programs are a win for organizations that gain qualified employees, a win for employees who get to work with qualified co-workers, and a win for referring employees who benefit from the recognition, or in some cases, the financial incentives of their employee referral program. Employee involvement is key to an effective employee selection process.
11 Sites to Find Work at Home Jobs
11 Sites to Find Work at Home Jobs 11 Sites to Find Work at Home Jobs Timing is an important aspect of any job search. Getting your resume or application in front of the right person (or even at the right company) at the right time can make all the difference. Of course, unless you have an inside contact at a company, itâs hard to know when itâs hiring. Locating multiple sources of fresh job leads can help you find out when companies have open positions. Now, you could troll the Internet and/or Craigslist to find job leads yourself, but that is very time consuming and probably unnecessary, given whatâs available on the Internet. Since my focus is work-at-home jobs, Iâve put together some links to (mostly) free daily job leads blogs and websites that specialize in telecommuting and freelance jobs. Work-at-Home Job Leads Bookmark this page and come back to it regularly. But remember these job leads arenât pre-screened, so know the signs of a work-at-home scam. Rat Race Rebellion - Daily job leads here run the gamut, but a lot are home call center companies. Telecommute Job List - This site segments itself into lists for legal, accounting, writing, Internet/web design, medical jobs from home. Work at Home Space - These are all pretty much Craigslist posting, but this makes it a lot easier than searching multiple citiesâ listings. FlexJobs - This service posts decent telecommuting gigs, but it is not free so read the FlexJobs review first to decide if itâs right for you. FreelanceJobOpenings.com - These are mostly entry-level writing jobs, but youâll find translation and search engine evaluation job leads here as well. Indeed.com Telecommuting - This popular careers website is sorted by telecommuting jobs; to narrow it to your field, choose additional search terms for your industry. Jobs.jobs - Major companies use the .jobs domain to advertise open positions. FWJ Freelance Writing Jobs - As the name implies, this one specialized in jobs for writers, editors and bloggers. It is updated daily. WAHJobLeads - The opportunities on this board are culled from a variety of sources. It isnât updated daily, though. Non Phone Jobs - Crowdsourcing, online teaching, data entry and search evaluation are among the types of positions on this site. Entries arenât dated so itâs tough to know how fresh they are unless youâre a regular visitor. The Work at Home Journal - Though this site is updated frequently, not everything it lists are job leads, but sometimes they are companies that hire telecommuters regularly. Work-at-Home Companies However, one problem with published lists of daily job leads can be that many other people see them too, making the competition tougher. So while browsing job leads in your field may be important, pinpointing a company that may hire you to work from home and checking its job listings periodically is important as well. So also check out this list of more than 200 companies with work-at-home jobs, and scroll down for links to list of these WAH companies divided by industry or see this index of work-at-home job lists. Unlike the above links, the companies listed in the links below may not necessarily be hiring at this time. However, they are known to directly hire telecommuters on a regular basis, so check back often if you a company youâre interested in. Amazon HQ2 means 50,000+ new jobs, but not everyones happy about it
Amazon HQ2 means 50,000+ new jobs, but not everyone's happy about it Amazon HQ2 means 50,000+ new jobs, but not everyone's happy about it After more than a year of deliberation, Amazon has decided to divide its second headquarters between New York City and Arlington, Virginia. The campuses will play host to more than 50,000 jobs with an average salary of $150 thousand, and hiring begins next year.Amazonâs announcement comes after months of state and local governments vying for the business giantâs new offices, and much speculation about where it might land.Though the new sites mean billions in incremental tax revenue and investment, locals in Long Island City, Queens, have taken issue with Amazonâs choice to move into their already teeming neighborhood. Other critics have focused on the companyâs dramatic, year-long search that ultimately ended with headquarters near the countryâs two major political, financial and media hubs: Manhattan and Washington, D.C.Politicians celebrate âbig winâBefore Amazon announced the locations of its second headquarters, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo joked, âIâll chang e my name to Amazon Cuomo, if thatâs what it takes.â The company has been promised more than $1.5 billion in incentives from New York state and plans to apply for more incentives through the city.âToday, with Amazon committing to expand its headquarters in Long Island City, New York can proudly say that we have attracted one of the largest, most competitive economic development investments in U.S. history,â Cuomo said in a statement. âEconomic opportunity and investment will flourish for the entire region.âNew York City Mayor Bill de Blasio echoed Cuomo, tweeting âNew York City is about to get tens of thousands of new, good paying jobs and Amazon is about to meet the most talented workforce in the world in one of the most diverse places on the planet.âIn Virginia, Governor Ralph Northam touted âa big win for Virginiaâ in a video with a âVirginia is for Amazon loversâ screen as its background.âAll of Virginia will see the benefits,â Northam said.Locals wo rry about housing, transportationAs concerns mounted that the Amazon headquarters might land in Queens, journalist Elizabeth Sile took to Twitter.âThe thought of even 10 more people riding the 7 train makes me want to pass out,â she wrote. âRIP to my neighborhood(,) which has already been dying with all the rich people moving here anyway. I guess its death will be swifter.âSile is not the only one who is worried about overcrowded subway cars or rising housing costs. One Twitter user wrote, âThere goes my rent.âCommunity groups aware of how the influx of high-paid employees will affect the area have recommended Amazon pay a gentrification tax, according to The New York Times. Zillow estimates that rent has gone up by almost a third over the past five years in Amazonâs original host city, Seattle, and Manhattan is already infamous for its oversaturated real estate market that constantly crowds into other boroughs and suburbs.Local politicians have denounced Amazonâs pl ans to move into Queens. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a U.S. congressmember-elect, wrote on Twitter that her community found the decision âextremely concerning,â especially in light of the tax incentives the government has offered Amazon.âDisplacement is not community development. Investing in luxury condos is not the same thing as investing in people and families,â Ocasio-Cortez wrote. âShuffling working class people out of a community does not improve their quality of life.âState Senator Michael Gianaris and City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer released a joint statement saying they âwere not elected to serve as Amazon drones.ââOffering massive corporate welfare from scarce public resources to one of the wealthiest corporations in the world at a time of great need in our state is just wrong,â they wrote. In September, Amazon briefly joined Apple as the only companies with a $1 trillion market cap.âAmazon is one of the richest companies in the world,â New York C ity Council Speaker Corey Johnson wrote in a statement. âBut you canât put a price on community input, which has been missing throughout this entire process.âCritics take issue with location choicesWhen Amazon announced its plans for a second headquarters, it invited applications through a public process and had few qualifications for its new site. Cities across the United States and Canada, including Dallas and Nashville, made the short list. But when it came down to the decision, Amazon chose two of North Americaâs most booming areas that critics say did not need the companyâs business.âBringing economic opportunity to the prosperity-starved environs of (checks notes) ⦠New York and ⦠(looks again) ⦠Washington ⦠D.C. â¦,â tweeted Alex Burns, a New York Times national political correspondent.âThink of what they could have done in Detroit or Newark,â another Twitter user wrote.Still, others suspected Amazonâs hyped public process for selecting the locati on of its new headquarters was a strategic move.âDozens of cities have shared reams of data with Amazon that their own citizens do not have access to,â tweeted Stacy Mitchell, co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. âAmazon will use this data to build out its empire: To site stores, warehouses, etc. To get in early on the right real estate. To beat out competitors because it knows things they donât. In other words, Americaâs city leaders are accomplices to a monopolist.â

Religion in the Workplace
Religion in the Workplace Religion in the Workplace How do you handle the gray areas of accommodating religious diversity at work? Accommodating, incorporating, and embracing diversity in the workplace has been a common thread among many of our articles recently. Each piece asks and answers different questions about diversity, including âHow do you uphold the rights and preferences of individual employees?â and âHow do you tap into the benefits of diversity while avoiding the possible challenges?â In a timely example of accommodating a religion-based need in a communal situation, I had to address this struggle in a club I help lead, outside of the workplace, but within a similar situation to what many experience on the job. Since many of the factors in this situation parallel things one might see at work, we used many of the basic employment laws to help shape our thinking around this issue. Hereâs our story. The Background Our club is one that requires physical contact between members. Similar to activities such as partner yoga, wrestling, flying trapeze, or ballroom dancing, you simply canât participate in the club if you are unwilling to be in contact with the other participants. Our club is coed, but unlike ballroom dancing, there is no historic, traditional, or expected gender distinction for who someone might be paired up with during the course of the activity. Our club, although open to the public, is also offered as a course for credit at a local university. So at any given time, some of the students in this club may be receiving school credit for attending, while others arenât. The Situation Recently one of our new students requested that he not be partnered with female students due to religious restrictions. And he asked that the leader working with his group at the time share this request with the other club leaders. This poses a challenge for the rest of the club members for a few reasons. Attendance varies from meeting to meeting and it is impossible to guarantee that there will always be a male in attendance to work with this participant. As members progress in skill level, the numbers of available participants decrease, thus by continuing to participate in the club, accommodating this request will become harder. As members progress in skill level, they are expected to teach newer students. Teaching generally includes a certain level of physical contact for demonstration purposes. It would be difficult to meet the needs of our students when an instructor cannot adequately teach a portion of them. The Factors Considered Although our organization is run as a club and not a business, this situation could arise in many workplaces, especially those requiring a physical element to participate. As a leadership team, we discussed this situation holistically as well as the specific request. The factors considered can be broken down into three general categories: rules, laws and precedent; impact to the club; and impact to the student. Rules, laws, and precedent To help us think through this situation, we looked at several employment rules and principles that often guide decisions in the workplace. Would accommodating this student pose an unreasonable hardship to the club? Would this student be able to execute tasks needed to complete the course for full credit with reasonable accommodation? Does the affiliated university have any specific rules or precedent that would apply in this situation? Impact to the club While it may be a little bit inconvenient to accommodate this student, it is really not any more inconvenient than accommodating a student with an injury, which we already do frequently. If the student owns the responsibility to remind others of the situation as needed and sit out during activities where his needs canât be accommodated (auditing portions of the class instead of participating when a male partner isnât available for example), then class disruption should be minimal. On the other hand, inviting this student to stay with the club beyond the first quarter would pose a hardship since he wouldnât be able to contribute fully as a more senior club member. Impact to the student The student in question is enrolled in our club for school credit, and it is too late for him to drop the class this quarter. Thus by leaving now he would receive a failing or incomplete grade for this particular class. The Decision After analyzing several options, our team decided to allow the student to finish the quarter as a club participant. We communicated that he would own the responsibility to communicate his situation and sit out of activities as needed. We agreed that observing the class instead of participating during these times would not impact his attendance or his grade. And we let him know that in order to progress in the club beyond the first quarter, he would need to interact with female students. As you seek talent to fill your jobs, you may come across similar situations where, due to religion, a candidate canât fully participate in all aspects of the job the way it has been previously done. Although employment laws offer some flexibility to companies to hire candidates who are able and willing to complete the work, by thinking through all of the possible options, you can often find a solution that is fair and respectful to the employee, the workplace, and the company.

How to Feel Successful Early on in Your Career- The Muse
How to Feel Successful Early on in Your Career- The Muse How to Feel Successful Early on in Your Career When I started my first job as a digital media coordinator at a small Catholic university, the only thought Iâd given to my âfive-year planâ was how Iâd explain it in an interview. Flash forward five years and two titles later and I had settled into a day-to-day routine. I found myself increasingly bored with work I was once excited about. As I began planning the next phase in my career, I realized that for all of the experience, connections, and skills I had developed up to that point, I hadnât paid close enough attention to the big picture of what would make me feel successful. Turns out, it isnât just about your salary. I wasnât alone in feeling restless early in my career. According to a 2016 study conducted by LinkedIn, Millennials will change jobs four (or more!) times before the age of 32 (as compared to Gen-Xers who made two moves in that timespan). But what I learned is that if you just leap into your next role, you may feel the same restlessness. However, if you work at feeling successful in the job you have, you might just find happiness there. And if you donât? Not only will you avoid regrets, but everything youâve done to bolster your current experience will make you a really attractive job applicant. So, whatever path you end up taking, youâre setting yourself up for success. Try this: 1. Document Your Wins Successful people get things done. Look at your organizationâs goals and objectives. How have you contributed individually or as a member of a team to bring positive (and measurable) results to achieve them? Consider where you solved a problem, created something new, or saved resources for your company. Be as detailed as possible when documenting experiences. (Bonus: It only takes 15 minutes a week, and this guide will walk you through how to do it.) Writing down your proudest work achievements pays off in a lot of ways. In times of self-doubt, they serve as a confirmation of your abilities and an immediate injection of confidence. During a job search, they make impactful resume bullet points, attention-grabbing cover letter statements, and a great answer to some of those pesky behavioral questions that everyone hates to answer, like, âTell me about a project youâre most proud of.â So, use your wins as a guide to keep excelling in your current role- or go out and get your next one. 2. Contribute to Team Achievements Itâs so easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day and become so focused on our own responsibilities that we forget to engage with our peers in a meaningful way. Take the time to put yourself in their shoes. If theyâre struggling, how can you help? Become the person your colleagues seek out for something youâve developed expertise in. Is there something youâre really good at that can you offer to help them with? All the better if itâs something you actually enjoy! Donât discount soft skills like active listening. You could be the go-to person when they need someone to bounce an idea off of: Itâll keep your days fresh, and youâll know you played a part in their achievements. Another way to pitch in is by accepting a task no one else wants. Sure, you donât want that to take up the bulk of your time, but if it wonât disrupt your current workflow (for more than a few hours), demonstrating your commitment to the team wonât go unnoticed. It could be that engaging with your team helps you feel more connected to- and inspired by- your work. And if not, youâll be padding your resume with examples of your stellar work performance in the meantime. YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAY STUCK IN A RUT We know experts who specialize in getting un-stuck. Talk to a Career Coach Today 3. Pursue a Personal Project Are there opportunities for you to align your personal interests with professional growth? For instance, if youâre really interested in graphic design and your company has a graphic design team, you could ask to work with them on a creative project to learn more about design and the companyâs graphic standards. If thereâs no opportunity to apply what most interests you to a project at your current company, design your own. Channel your passion for writing into a personal blog or freelance writing gig. Explore your interest in web design by building your own website or digital portfolio. A personal projectâs a low-risk way to challenge yourself, develop new skills, and explore other careers. At the very least, your personal project will provide you with something to be proud of when your regular job isnât satisfying those needs. Plus, it can also lead you to a new opportunity that youâd never even imagined. (Hereâs a true story of that happening!) Whether youâre just feeling stuck in a bit of a rut or pretty certain itâs time to change roles, focusing on your success makes sense. Itâs so much more than patting yourself on the back: It can help you grow where you are- or lead you to something entirely new. Either way, this reflection will help guide your career so you can feel good about the start of your career, as well as whatâs to come.

The bad habit all husbands and wives need to avoid
The bad habit all husbands and wives need to avoid The bad habit all husbands and wives need to avoid Marriage is supposed to be a partnership, with both people functioning as a cohesive unit, working in tandem towards the same goals and sharing the same opinions. Unfortunately, it doesnât always work that way.Couples are human and, as humans, prone to error, disagreement, and dissenting points of view. As a result, couples will say or do things that undermine each other.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Chances are you do, too. Whether itâs correcting someone in a conversation, sharing personal information with an outside, or saying âyesâ when the other parent says no, couples undermine each other all the time. Done regularly, it can chip away at the foundation of a relationship and lead to resentment or worse. So, how can you avoid falling into this very common trap? Communication is key. As is having a constant understanding of how your partner might feel abo ut your actions. Here are a few common scenarios where partners undermine one another and the what they can do to avoid it in the future. How to avoid undermining your spouse when disciplining the kidsThis is one of the most common areas in which undermining occurs. Parents will work against each other because they havenât agreed upon the rules up front. As a result, what will happen is one parent becomes the de-facto bad guy constantly enforcing the rules, while the other is the fun, chill parent, always letting the kids do what they want.âThis dynamic creates negative feelings not only for both parents but also for their children,â says Jan Carey, a licensed clinical social worker. âIn some families, the conflict isnât addressed effectively and each parent ends up parenting in their own opposing style dishing up parenting in their own way inadvertently creating a âsplitâ where the child does what they want.âIn order to keep that divide from happening, Carey sugg ests creating a list of five rules and talk opening about what theyâre hoping for each rule to achieve. This agreement will help prevent one parent constantly undermining the other. âShould the couple disagree on the rules they need to continue to discuss them and it may take several conversations where they discuss why itâs important and identify if the reason they feel strongly about it is related to their own childhood and then explain how. This will provide the depth necessary for the partner to understand the context of why their partner is so intensely organized around the rule. How to not undermine your spouse when dealing with your in-lawsWhen one partner comes from a very close-knit family, there can be friction as they work to please both their spouse and their family as well. What tends to happen in such a situation is that the familyâs needs may end up coming before their partnerâs. Plans are made without consulting the spouse, a family memberâs feelings ar e taken into consideration over the spouse, or the partner will resist standing up to the family when their spouse feels wronged.âCouples who come from an enmeshed family have great challenges in trying to please both themselves and their extended family because there is still a felt obligation to please everyone, despite having grown up and moved away from their family of origin,â says Carey. âMany couples get stuck in trying to meet their own coupleâs needs if their needs challenge their family of originâs needs.âTo avoid this, couples need to be upfront about where the lines are when it comes to their needs versus the needs of the extended family. âJust being aware that one person in the relationship is oriented more naturally to taking care of their extended family than the other partner allows the couple to make space for that difference,â says Carey. âSetting priorities as a family will allow a couple to make decisions together with less angst and more harmon y.âHow to not undermine your spouse when talking with friendsItâs not uncommon for couples to talk openly with their friends when their partner isnât around. However, that openness can end up, even inadvertently, undermining or embarrassing your spouse. For example, if you talk to your friends about a sexual issue you and your spouse are having, how do you expect that he or she will feel the next time youâre all together? Even if you are going to your friend seeking advice or comfort, revealing personal information can harm your spouseâs ego.Carey says that couples should be up front about what topics are off limits when it comes to peers and make sure that they honor that agreement at all times. However, she notes, if one partner is bothered enough by something (such as a sexual issue) that theyâre feeling the need to bring it up to their friends, the other partner should take that into consideration. âThe best course of action involves taking the risk of talking to your spouse directly about your frustration in order to motivate them to do something differently,â she says. âTaking the problem on directly allows you to keep things private because itâs being handled.âHow to not undermine your spouse when dealing with family financesFinancial matters are one of the most common stressors in a marriage and one the ways couples undermine each other regularly, making large purchases without consulting the other or even just spending on things like lunches out of small, unnecessary items that they canât afford. Many of these approaches to money are shaped in childhood and can have long-lasting impact. For example, if someone grew up without a lot of money, they may now feel the need to overcompensate and buy expensive things to give the illusion of security. This can be very undermining for the spouse who is trying to keep the finances together.Carey suggests that couples meet regularly, even if itâs only once a month to discuss the fi nances and understand where the household stands money-wise. Itâs important to approach money as a team and work towards financial goals, as opposed to one partner always feel as though theyâre cleaning up the otherâs money messes.âDiscussing larger purchase decisions before actually buying anything can avoid one partner from feeling like they are sacrificing or doing without and can enable both partners to negotiate purchases that are important to each person,â says Carey. âTalking about money where both people have a voice can minimize the anxiety which money often creates.âHow to not undermine your spouse when discussing sexItâs quite normal for the frequency of sex to fluctuate in a marriage. There are a number of outside influences that can impact a coupleâs desire or ability to connect sexually, from work to kids to just day-to-day stress. But even little distractions, such as social media, can get in the way of sex and make one partner begin to feel undermin ed and like everything else around them is more important than being intimate.Carey proposes that couples make a weekly date night, but to try and engage in activities that are outside of their comfort zone. Things like taking a dancing class or a painting class can reignite the same feelings of newness and discovery that you first had when you were dating and can put intimacy back on the table. She also suggested not making sex, the actual act itself, the ultimate endgame. âIf you enter sex with the idea that the moment will take you both where you need to go and that you touch each other not just to please, but to please yourself too, you suddenly have the kind of sex that dreams are made of,â she says. This article originally appeared on Fatherly. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Connect With Your Board of Directors - The Muse
How to Connect With Your Board of Directors - The Muse How to Connect With Your Board of Directors A nonprofitâs board of directors is responsible for the welfare of the organization, and most of the members probably got involved because they care about the nonprofitâs mission and the work its employees (read: you) do every day. But unless youâre the executive director, you may not have any kind of relationship with your board. That can be a big mistake. Knowing your board members is about much more than rubbing elbows with the head honchos. They need to be aware of whatâs going on in the organization day-to-day, and you can gain key insight into the organizationâs goals and vision (and how you may fit into it). Now, you do need to be realistic about your interactions with the board. As an intern, for example, you shouldnât expect to have weekly lunches with the board chair. However, there are a few key ways you can- and should- be building relationships with board members. 1. Attend Board Meetings The most obvious place to talk to a board member is (surprise!) at a board meeting. Nonprofit board meetings are supposed to be public, and staff should be allowed to join (except for the executive session, when the board discusses salaries and other confidential matters). If your organization doesnât typically have open meetings, ask your supervisor if you can sit in on a meeting, explaining that youâd like to learn more about the board. In my first nonprofit job, I was responsible for taking minutes at board meetings. I learned a lot about the organization, the different members, and how to take minutes (pro tip: you donât need to record every word). Generally speaking, you shouldnât ask questions during the meeting, but you should feel free to discuss any questions with members during the break or afterward as you make small talk. Not only will this enforce a positive impression of you, but youâll also serve as a good reminder of the daily impact that the boardâs decisions make on the staff. 2. Provide Updates Copying the board on an email that includes positive feedback that you got from a client or reports on a recent goal that you met can remind board members of the real-world implications of their work. It will also put you in a good light by showcasing your stellar performance. I realized at a recent job that the board was clueless about the true scope of our organizationâs programming. With my bossâ blessing, I put together a brief summary about our progress. Not only was the board impressed by everything we did, but the email also armed them with talking points for when they approached funders and other VIPs. Thereâs no magic number as to the number of updates you send, so I suggest that you only do so when thereâs big news to report. An unscheduled- but important- email will boost the chances of it being read and taken seriously. Just make sure to get your bossâ approval before you send that email! 3. Talk to Them at Events I went to an event a few years ago for an organization of which I was chair of the board. I introduced myself to the two staff members, they stared at me blankly. I checked in with them later in the evening to see if I could buy them a drink or give them a break from their responsibilities- same response. Needless to say, I was not impressed. I didnât need to chat and giggle with them, but they didnât appear to understand my role at the organization or the role of the other board members, who they roundly ignored. Between all the board members there, we had contacts at every organization in our field in the country. Later, when the staff members tried to move up in their careers, we were consulted for references and couldnât offer their prospective employers a single positive recommendation. Alternatively, a little chitchat would have helped their chances immensely, and a few thoughtful questions about the role of the board or our vision for the future could have made me their champion. The board of directors represents a wealth of expertise, contacts, and passion. If you can create a solid relationship with them, youâll find that it can help you throughout your career.
